As people continue to be in need because of Hurricane Katrina, we must unite together with prayer, compassion, and thoughtful understanding during this great time of pain.

Matthew 9:36 (NIV) When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

New Start (Click for MP3)
Starting over is seldom a simple proposition. Learning to walk again, rebuilding a relationship, gaining courage — in all these we can draw strength through our faith in God.

Psalms 18:20 (MSG) God made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before him. When I got my act together, he gave me a fresh start.

Ezekiel 36:26 (NLT) And I will give you a new heart with new and right desires, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony heart of sin and give you a new, obedient heart.

Some storms we can see and anticipate, other are a complete surprise or even shock. Here are some thoughts about Hurricane Katrina and a call for all of us to help.

Storms:

Matthew 8:23 (NIV) 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.

25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

Psalm 56:10-11 (NLT) 10 O God, I praise your word. Yes, LORD, I praise your word. 11 I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?

Matthew 10:29-30 (NLT) 29 Not even a sparrow, worth only half a penny, can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. 30 And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. 31So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to him than a whole flock of sparrows.

We all cross paths with people who are inconsiderate, stubborn, selfish, and downright mean. What if we were the person in their day to leave something nice behind to brighten their day?

1. Step Back — give space
2. Flip Side
3. Become compassionate.
4. Leave something nice

Proverbs 3:3 (NLT) Never let loyalty and kindness get away from you! Wear them like a necklace; write them deep within your heart.

Luke 6:30 (NLT) Give what you have to anyone who asks you for it; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back.

Acts 20:24 (NLT) But my life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about God’s wonderful kindness and love.

Vacation Thoughts (Click for MP3)
Some thoughts that came to me as a result of our August vacation in Colorado. We matter to our world, our families, friends, and most importantly to God.

Think about: Beautiful creation (Rocky Mountains, peaks, flowing streams, waterfalls, desert rides, night sky).

Colossians 1:15-17 (MSG)
15 We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created.
16 For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels—everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.
17 He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment.

Psalms 91:1-16 (NLT)
1 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 This I declare of the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I am trusting him.
3 For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from the fatal plague.

So … Your cell beeps and you read this: “Farewell, cousin, here we’re frozen.”
Then within the hour you hear about your cousin’s flight. The Boeing 737 that was pretty new (manufactured in 1998) crashes.

That morning, before all the reports, I stepped off of the same model of aircraft. We didn’t have any turbulance or “air conditioning” problems. When the flight attendents went through their safety reviews, I never imagined that half-way around the world others would soon suffocate and freeze to death.

I often think about the contrasts in life. I am so glad that I place my trust in the Lord Jesus. Without Him I would truly be nothing and without hope.

Psalms 125:1 (NLT) Those who trust in the LORD are as secure as Mount Zion; they will not be defeated but will endure forever.

Matthew 6:20-21 (NLT) 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where they will never become moth-eaten or rusty and where they will be safe from thieves. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be.
