Kindergarten Curriculum

Language Arts - Open Court 2002 Edition
This program offers students a solid background in letter sounds, letter formation, sound blending and analytical and critical thinking skills. At this level, it does not emphasize reading, but rather a solid foundation upon which students can easily begin to associate spoken language with written language.

Skills developed at this level include: One sound learned for each letter of the alphabet Letter shapes (formation) of capital and lower case letters Penmanship/Writing-using a three lined staff Dictation Proofreading Building vocabulary Question asking Analyzing patterns, likes and differences Problem solving Sequencing Following directions Sharing (oral presentations) Although not a part of Open Court, students also work with inventive spelling and language experience stories.

Math - Houghton Mifflin 2002 Edition
This program is supplemented with hands on activities that provide students with concrete, tangible experiences to build mathematical and arithmetic concepts. Manipulatives and workbook pages are used to develop the following skills: Free exploration Sort and classify Patterning Number concepts (0-30) Number writing (1-100) Comparisons (measurement, weight, money) Graphing Calendars and clocks Counting to 100 (by 1's, 5's, and 10's) Addition and subtraction through 10 Recording information Geometry and Fractions *At home activities are provided with each workbook page.

Bible -Association of Christian Schools International 1995 Edition
ACSI provides Biblical instruction on Bible stories and the life of Jesus. Topics covered include: Creation I am special, God made me God and Families Jesus' Life (Birth, Ministry, Death and Resurrection) Old and New Testament Bible heroes (David, Samson, Moses, Daniel, Paul & Silas, etc.) Character Traits we study include: Obedience Faith Thankfulness Love Honesty Perseverance Friendliness Kindness Operation Christmas Child - shoebox gifts for children around the world Weekly Memory Verses are required.

Students in kindergarten look at their world emphasizing the geographic and historical connections between today's world and the world long ago. Stories of ordinary and extraordinary people help describe concepts, experiences, and responsibility. Viewing history past with today's world reinforces the concept of civic behavior: how we interact respectfully with each other, following rules, and respecting the rights of others. Topics covered under the Social Studies category are as follows: Citizenship (discussed extensively in Bible) United States - state symbols (flags, eagle, statue of Liberty), patriotism Community/School - Helpers/jobs Maps/Globe Holidays and the people/events/places associated with the holiday.
