Language Arts - Open Court 2002 Edition
This program offers students a solid background in letter sounds, letter formation, sound blending and analytical and critical thinking skills. At this level, it does not emphasize reading, but rather a solid foundation upon which students can easily begin to associate spoken language with written language.
Skills developed at this level include:
One sound learned for each letter of the alphabet
Letter shapes (formation) of capital and lower case letters
Penmanship/Writing-using a three lined staff
Dictation
Proofreading
Building vocabulary
Question asking
Analyzing patterns, likes and differences
Problem solving

Although not a part of Open Court, students also work with inventive spelling and language experience stories.
