Curriculum – Physical Education

CORE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Grade Level: 9 – 12 (Course may be repeated in grades 10 – 12)
Length of Course: 1 Year
Credits: 5 credits per semester
Prerequisite: None

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This class will consist of selected units in the following activities: soccer, cross country training, basketball, softball, badminton, volleyball, floor hockey, track and field, and conditioning. Each unit will be approximately three weeks in length.
*Note: This course is required for all 9th grade students. An additional year of Core Physical Education is required for students not participating in Contract Physical Education.

CONTRACT PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Grade Level: 9 – 12 (Course may be repeated in grades 10 – 12)
Length of Course: One semester
Credits: 5 credits per semester (May be repeated for a maximum of 30 credits)
Prerequisite: Approval of parent, P.E. teacher, and specially trained supervisor

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students may earn P.E. credit by participation in after school sports or other physical activity through contractual arrangements under the following conditions:

  • The activity has an instructional component that is aligned with the California State Framework for Education Grades 9–12.
  • The activity meets regularly, has adult supervision, and the supervisor is willing to cooperate with school representatives to finalize the terms of the contract. Parents cannot be supervisors.
  • The adult instructor/supervisor provides written verification of student participation and attendance. Regular grading period evaluations as well as schedules are required.
  • The activity must be in a sports area not offered in the current El Sobrante Christian High School program.
  • The student participates in the activity a minimum of 250 minutes per week for the entire semester.

HEALTH

Grade Level: 9
Length of Course: 1 semester
Credits: 5 credits per semester
Prerequisite: None (To be taken in conjunction with Computers I or II)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will meet the Health requirements for graduation. Content includes units on physical, emotional, and social health issues. Unit topics include nutrition, substance abuse, sexual health, relationships, chronic diseases, first aid and health management, decision-making, and goal setting.
