ENGLISH – Seventh grade English covers areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Grammar and vocabulary are ongoing throughout the year with units in literature, drama, and poetry included.
MATH – Seventh grade math is designed to prepare students who are not yet ready for Pre Algebra I. Problem solving, reasoning, number relationship, and theory are emphasized.
PRE ALGEGRA I – this is the first year of a two-year pre algebra program to prepare students for Algebra I in high school.
PRE- ALGEBRA II –this course is designed to prepare students for an Algebra I course. It stresses problem solving, number theory, solving equations and inequalities, graphing, and geometry. An introduction to statistics and probability is also presented when time permits.
SCIENCE – Students study basic life science. The course consists of the study of cells and living organisms, plants, animals, heredity and change, the human body, ecology, and the use of a microscope. Science labs are an integral part of the science curriculum. A five-day outdoor education trip to Hume Lake is part of the seventh grade science curriculum.
GEOGRAPHY – Using the text, WORLD GEOGRAPHY: A Physical and Cultural Approach, students cover the major themes in geography including physical and political geography of the world, climates, peoples, and cultures. The course involves hands-on and art related activities, along with map work and textbook study. The assignments are designed to enhance the students’ appreciation for God’s creation.
BIBLE – The seventh grade Bible curriculum centers on the life and character of Jesus Christ. Using the New International Version Bible as the sole textbook, students will first explore concepts concerning the Bible as our authority for daily living, the Trinity, and the Old Testament prophesies about the promised Messiah. The majority of the year will be spent learning about the teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as told in the Gospels, and how to apply these teachings to our own Christian walk. The course will end with Christ’s ascension and the establishment of His church. Sex education from a Biblical perspective is part of the seventh grade Bible curriculum.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Students will be instructed in basic health and fitness information that will provide them with lifetime skills. There is an emphasis on finding a sport or fitness activity that the students enjoy that will provide them with adequate aerobic exercise throughout their life. Emphasis will also be on basic sports skills as well as how to work together under pressure, good sportsmanship, and how to apply Christian principles to daily life.
ELECTIVE – Each year a wide variety of electives are offered. Every student may choose one elective to complete the seven period day that is offered at El Sobrante Christian Junior High School.
