Language Arts –Composition: The Writing process, Novels: The Shining Sword, The Cay, The Odyssey, and The Giver.
The English curriculum is designed to develop strong critical thinking and communication skills. This includes reading a variety of literature, (focusing on classical works), reading comprehension, the writing process, vocabulary, grammar and spelling. During the course of the year, students will compose various works of art including journals, essays, reports, short stores, poems, and more. In an effort to develop good public speaking and oratorical skills, students are encouraged to articulate their thoughts during class discussions, participate in debates, make oral presentations, recite poetry, and make speeches. Although the textbook is utilized, the practical, hands-on approach is emphasized because students learn best by doing.
Math – Houghton-Mifflin 2002 Edition
This year in sixth grade math we will be mastering the four arithmetic operations with whole numbers, positive fractions, positive decimals, and positive and negative integers. Students will be applying math concepts that have been introduced in the lower grades. Students will apply this knowledge to statistics and probability. Students will study and understand the concepts of mean, median, and mode of data sets, and learn how to calculate the range. Students will use addition and multiplication of fractions to calculate the probability of events. Students will master the basics of geometry, identifying various figures, calculating perimeters and areas, and utilizing letters for numbers in formulas involving geometric shapes and in ratios to represent an unknown part of an expression. Students will learn how to make decisions about how to approach problems and students will use strategies, skills, and concepts to find solutions.
Bible – Association of ChristianSchools International- Christ and My Life - 1995 Edition, NIV Bible
Students will be studying the New Testament in bible class. They will discuss the life of Christ and his ministry, crucifixion and resurrection. They will consider the following questions:
What does God command and desire for us to do?
What does it mean to be a Christian?
What does God promise us?
In addition, weekly memory verses are assigned as well as quarterly projects. Special Projects for the year will be:

Special Group Project: Heroes of the Christian faith.
Social Studies – Human Heritage, A World History -Glencoe
Sixth grade history will study ancient civilizations dating back to 3000 B.C. through the Middle Ages. Students will learn the importance of geography to explain the development of these civilizations. Emphasis will be placed on the everyday lives, problems, and accomplishments of these civilizations and how they transformed the world forever. Students will consider why civilizations developed where and when they did, why they became dominant, and why they declined. They will study the interactions between the various cultures, emphasizing their enduring contributions and the link that exists, despite time, between the contemporary and ancient worlds. The Old Testament will be used often because God’s Word provides the most accurate historical presentation of the development of the countries of interest.
Science – Discovery Works – California Edition –Houghton Mifflin Science- 2000 Edition
In Sixth grade students will gain a wealth of knowledge by observing phenomena, conducting regular laboratory activities including experiments, dissection of specimens, and participating in individual and group projects. This will enable them to discover “how and why” things work.
The focus of the Science curriculum is Earth and Physical Science, which includes geology, paleontology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and meteorology. A bit of Life Science will also be included particularly microbiology and biology. The highlight of the year will be their project for the Science Fair.
