The over-arching spirit of the El Sobrante Christian School dress code is that of modesty and a positive, Christian witness. Because of this, there are certain standards of dress that we feel will best represent our school, while still allowing students a level of individuality and personal choice. These dress standards are meant to be for the benefit of the students and the total school program.
STANDARDS FOR ALL STUDENTS
1. Students are to dress in a neat, clean, and modest manner.
2. Extreme fad-style clothing will not be acceptable.
3. Clothing must not be torn or frayed.
4. Hair should be neatly groomed, out of the eyes, and of one natural color.
5. Jewelry should fit the age of the student. No overly large or distracting jewelry.
6. Clothing or jewelry of any type with inappropriate words, sayings, graphics, or emblems will not be allowed (this includes any music group items).
7. Body piercing (other than ear piercing for girls) is not permitted. No visible tattoos.
8. Shirts with collars are required every day for both girls and boys. No sports jerseys
GIRLS DRESS CODE STANDARDS
TOPS/BLOUSES:
1. Must have a collar that stays closed at a modest point on the neckline. Wearing a scoop necked shirt under a lower-opened, collared shirt is NOT acceptable..
2. Must hang naturally (without having to pull it down) AT LEAST 4 inches beyond the top edge of the waistband for the pants being worn with that top. **Midriff skin should never be seen, even when sitting, bending, or reaching.
3. Must not be of sheer fabric.
4. Must not be excessively tight.
5. Must have shoulder fabric that is at least 4 inches wide.
6. Sweatshirts of any kind must have a collared shirt underneath, at all times.
7. Turtlenecks and mock turtleneck tops are OK if requirements 2-5 above are met.
PANTS, SHORTS, SKIRTS:
1. Must not be excessively tight.
2. Must fit so that midriff skin is covered at all times, even when sitting, bending, or reaching (**see above).
3. Shorts or skirt hem line must be no more than 4 inches up from the back bend of the knee, when sitting.
OTHER:
1. Shoes must be worn at all times. No flip-flops, slippers, or heels in excess of 2 inches.
2. No scarves or bandanas worn in any way. Hats OK for outside only.
3. Light make-up is permissible, with an emphasis on moderation.
BOYS DRESS CODE STANDARDS
TOPS/SHIRTS:
1. Must have a collar.
2. Must stay buttoned or zipped AT LEAST 2/3 of the way up at all times.
3. Must have sleeves. No sports jerseys or tank-style shirts, even if collared shirt is underneath.
4. Sweatshirts of any kind must have a collared shirt underneath, at all times.
5. Turtlenecks and mock turtleneck shirts or sweaters are OK.
PANTS, SHORTS:
1. Waist of pants must be worn at the top of hips.
2. Must not be overly large, baggy, or sagging.
3. Underwear/boxers should NEVER be seen, even when sitting, bending, or reaching.
OTHER:
1. Shoes must be worn at all times. No flip-flops or slippers.
2. No scarves or bandanas worn in any way. Sweatbands and hats OK for outside use only.
3. Must be clean-shaven at all times. (Parents are to determine a student’s 1st shave).
Any faculty or staff member of the school has the authority to enforce the following dress standards. If a teacher, staff member or administrator feels that a rule has been broken, they may request that the student change into appropriate clothing. They may be asked to wear their P.E. clothes, or the parent may be called to come and correct the problem.
